Advocacy Over Acceptance? Beware of Overhelping! Pass the proverbial megaphone to the people youre trying to help! So lets start with the facts. You have a cause. You love someone with Autism (insert other challenges here to make appropriately relevant). You want to help. You feel empowered in advocating for them, in doing something charitable, obtaining good karma, and your identity strengthens by being “about” something. You buy tee shirts, fundraise, “like” and post cool quotes and pictures on facebook, and even attend rallies and fairs… just make sure when you are posing for your pictures you don’t push the people with different abilities out of the way! Accept them as they are and remember your goals are about making THEM feel better, protected, and progressive in reaching THEIR goals. Don’t negate the fact that a lot of what you may not understand may be a part of their identity; something they want you to accept about them NOT something they want you want to change about them, fix, or take away.
At a charity event one man learns the story of Joey Lowenstein, his amazing mom Roberta, and the power of finding voice through RPM (Rapid Prompt Method)! Its a story of courage, diligence, and true magic. A taste: “And as if this were not reason enough to declare my support, I was also there to meet a remarkable young man whom I had previously heard so much about. His name is Joey Lowenstein. He is a 16-year-old with autism. He and his mother, Roberta Lowenstein, a long-time supporter of the FACES organization, were present to support the important work being done by FACES and Joey’s doctor, Orin Devinsky, MD. I met Roberta several months earlier at an event we attended and heard about her son but this was the first time I had heard his story directly. Diagnosed with autism at the age of 2, Joey — and Roberta — have endured much over the years. The most inspiring of which was Joey’s recent conquering of a 14-year virtual silence. Unable to communicate through typical speech (or so was thought), Joey had uttered few words through the age of 14. However, this changed two years ago when Joey’s mother, his Rock of Gibraltar, discovered a method of communicating called Rapid Prompting Method (RPM). RPM is an educational platform that utilizes a letter board to help facilitate education and communication. Having tried dozens of therapies over the years nothing could have prepared Roberta for what was coming. Matthew Kennedy, teacher, with Joey and Roberta Lowenstein. Photo: Annie Watt. What was previously impossible became possible when Joey began using a letter board to speak. The flood gates of communication had opened (and so had Roberta’s tears) outpouring 14 years of ‘bottled-up’ expression, thoughts concealed, inner fears unheard and hopeful dreams for the future. Admittedly, my words fall short and any attempt I make to accurately express the significance of what really transpired is futile — Joey’s mother put it best when she said, “it was like a miracle.” Read the whole article here! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jim-luce/autistic-teen-wows-me_b_3020281.html

Recreational programming—quite simply, play—has proven hugely effective in helping children with special needs develop essential skills, yet a huge gap remains between the existing funding and actual programming needs. Recent research studies document the relationship of play to the development of skills like empathy, language and joint attention, as well as the understanding of social rules, problem solving abilities and language development. Through extracurricular programs in the community and in-school residencies, Daytime Moon fills this programming gap by offering an outlet for creative expression to this exceptional population. Statistics aside, the most important contribution Daytime Moon makes to this community is JOY. Our participants go from therapy to school to therapy… and Daytime Moon provides them a place to simply be themselves. By offering programs that focus on the unique voices of participants and work towards an original performance, our amazing actors learn one very important lesson with every program: it’s great to be them, just the way they are. Check them out: http://www.daytimemooncreations.org/ Please join us on May 8, 2013 for NAA NY Metro Chapter’s Annual Fundraiser Night Out in Blue! Celebrate our accomplishments and help us continue our efforts of providing resources and services to families affected by Autism. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 7:00-9:00pm HB Burger 127 West 43rd Street New York, NY Open bar with beer, wine and our signature drink Delicious hors d’oeuvres! Tickets are $75 per person and may be purchased here. This course will be held at the Emerge & See Education Center, in Manhattan. Level 2, Basic Applications of HANDLE, is a 12 hour, two-day event that will be held on Sunday/Monday, April 14 & 15, 2013. NAA NYM is happy to offer this course at a substantially reduced rate of $75 (materials and administration fees only!). Note that completion of Level 1 is a prerequisit for Level 2 Level 2: Basic Applications of HANDLE helps students begin to understand challenges in new ways through the HANDLE paradigm, opening their ”HANDLE eyes”. There is exploration of the systems that underpin daily function with an expanded view of the root causes of life and learning struggles. Now students can begin to apply their understanding of five additional unique HANDLE activities and explore ways to adapt them to different situations and individuals. This level is particularly helpful for professionals or those wanting HANDLE training as well as a more comprehensive overview for HANDLE clients and interested individuals.
